Def Jam recordings is an American Record Label, Their main focus is on hip hop and urban music. It is owned by Universal Music Group. The UK version is called Def Jam UK and also has a version in Japan called Def Jam Japan.

Def Jam was created by Rick Rubin in his room whilst he was at university, and its first release was a single by his punk-rock group Hose. Russell Simmons Joined Rubin shortly after they were introduced to eachother. The first single realeased with a Def Jam logo was T La Rock and Jazzy Jay's 'Its yours'.
